Case Study: Using Flow Wrappers Machine to Package Disposable Cutlery Like Knife and Fork

Today, we’re sharing a case on using horizontal form fill seal(HFFS) machines to package small disposable items. With the growing demand for automated packaging of items like knives, forks, and straws, pillow packing machine offer one of the most cost-effective and efficient solutions for businesses with limited budgets. They help reduce packaging, transportation, and storage costs by creating compact, hygienic, and easy-to-store back-sealed bags. Industries such as airlines, restaurants, and food delivery services commonly use this solution to package disposable cutlery.

In this case, a Southeast Asian cutlery manufacturer ordered a cutlery packaging machine from us. Their goal was to find a cost-effective and sanitary way to package disposable knives, forks, and spoons while ensuring the items were securely sealed to prevent contamination. Initially, they considered using three-side sealed bags, but to improve customer convenience, our team recommended back-sealed bags with easy-tear openings. Additionally, we suggested adding butterfly holes to allow the packages to be easily hung on retail shelves for better display.

After discussion, the customer finalized our proposed solution and purchased a D-250X flow wrapping machine. This machine uses film rolls and automates the entire process, including bag forming, filling, sealing, and cutting. It can produce bags with a width of 6 cm, perfectly matching the size of the customer’s cutlery. Additionally, it offers a packaging speed of up to 40-60 bags per minute.

Loading and Feeding System

Automatic feeding conveyors precisely align and place cutlery onto the packaging film, minimizing human intervention to ensure hygiene.

Sealing and Cutting Operations

The pillow packaging machine machine forms a back-seal (vertical seam) and simultaneously seals the ends.

Serrated-edge cuts are available for easy opening.

Equipped with high-sensitivity photoelectric sensors to detect color marks and ensure precise cutting, reducing material waste.

Dual frequency controllers allow flexible bag length adjustments without manual unloading, saving time and film.

Temperature Control and Packaging Materials

Independent PID temperature control supports various heat-sealable films, such as OPP, PE, PVC, OPP/CPP, PT/PE, and KOP/CPP. It also works with specialty films like CPP and OPP.

The film doesn’t stick to the cutter, preventing waste. The back seals are neat, tight, and hygienic, ensuring the safety of the cutlery.

Software Control and User-Friendly Operation

All controls are software-based, allowing easy adjustments and upgrades.

The flow pack packaging machine is simple to operate with a digital display showing film size, packaging speed, capacity, and temperature. Just adjust the parameters on the touch screen for quick and easy operation.

Quality Control Measures

Integrated sensors detect misaligned cutlery or faulty sealing.

Automatic rejection system removes defective packages.

Fault self-diagnosis displays errors clearly for easy troubleshooting.

Materials and Maintenance

Food-contact components use food-grade belts, while the main structure is carbon steel. The cutlery conveyor and push rods are made of stainless steel.

A simple transmission system powered by PLC minimizes mechanical contact, improving system stability and making maintenance easier.

Results and Outcomes

After several months of use, the customer reported a 30% increase in production speed with fewer operators required, significantly reducing operational costs. The flow packaging machine enabled the customer to meet growing demand during peak seasons while improving hygiene standards. The serrated easy-tear feature enhanced customer convenience, especially in fast-paced environments like airlines.

Overall, this packaging solution can be considered perfect. If you’re also looking for a suitable packaging method for your products, we recommend choosing the right machine that can flexibly handle different packaging combinations and selecting a trusted manufacturer. Conduct trial runs to identify any feeding or sealing issues before mass production, and perform regular maintenance to ensure consistent performance.
