Applications of pre-made bag packaging machine in food industry

The global pre-made pouch packaging market was valued at $11.71 billion in 2024 and is estimated to reach $16.15 billion by 2032

This growth shows food makers prefer packaging that saves time, protects freshness, supports hygiene and increases shelf life, plus appealing to buyers.

Pre-made pouch packing machines are now widely used in many industries like food, beverage, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, pet food, nutraceuticals and supplements, cosmetics, seeds, agricultural products and many more.

In this article, you will read the main applications of pre-made bag packaging machines in the food industry.

Applications of pre-made bag packaging machine by food type

Pre-made bag packaging machines open and fill the bag then seal the product. Also, these machines are available in three types: rotary, single-station horizontal and multi-station horizontal.

Bag packaging machines are used in many food categories. Each product has specific needs and they mostly cover them.

Snacks and chips

Chips, nuts and other snacks are liked because of their crunchiness and flavor. That needs to be preserved in packing. That’s why these products use pre-made pouches (bags) to protect these products from moisture and oxygen. Like many of these snack pouches  flush nitrogen before sealing to displace air and lock in freshness.

Packaging machines for snack or chips basically use multihead weighers or vibratory feeders to gently settle chips into the bag. The pouch’s layout not only keeps snacks crispy and fresh but also gives snacks good visibility.

For manufacturers, the benefit is “higher throughput and better accuracy”: automated systems count and weight each snack portion, fill it precisely, then seal it airtight. Some machines have “Quick changeovers” option. This means the same machine can run potato chips in the morning and pretzels in the afternoon with minimum downtime.

Bakery and biscuits

We all know that bakery items like cookies, biscuits and crackers are mostly fragile and prone to stalling. To keep them fresh pre-made pouch machines are used to seal them in bags. Right after baking and cooling, biscuits are placed into the pillow or ziplock or gusseted pouches(bags)  which are then sealed immediately. Packaging immediately means to create airtight seals around the biscuits to lock in moisture and flavor.

Modern biscuit packaging machines work like: a packaging line weighs ten cookies using a vibrating scale. Then drop them into each pouch and seal it on all sides. These machines are not just just used for preservation but also offer marketing advantages. Like clear windows or printing on the bag allows customers to see the product.

Overall, using a pre-made pouch packing machine increases productivity and consistency compared to manual bagging. Every package looks identical and reliably seals plus offer changeovers between different biscuit sizes or types that can be done quickly without wasting bags.

Confectionery and chocolates

Candy, chocolate bars and other confections are also bagged this way. In fact, packing machines are broadly used for wrapped or unwrapped sweets.

As sweet products mostly need protection from moisture, heat and insects. So, laminated pouches provide them a strong barrier. Pouches for wrapped candies, jelly beans or small chocolates normally have foil or metallized layers to keep the humidity out.

Packaging machines designed for confectionery handle them gently: candy pieces are vibrated into the bag or gravity fed through a funnel. These machines have great ability to fill pre-made pouches at room temperature. That is very useful for packing chocolates. Because these machines avoid heat build-up that could melt or discolor the product.

One problem with candies is that they can stick together or or to the machine surface. To avoid these situations, machines use a patterned vibrating scale or apply a Teflon coating on the surface. Both methods work effectively to stop candies from sticking.

These products are heavily packed in stand-up style pouches to look good and protect the candy from moisture and light. Also, consumers admire the convenience of these types of candy packing that can be resealed. Because the zip-lock feature allows the product to stay fresh still after opening.

The main advantage for producers is “high speed filling and sealing”. These features ensure that confectionery lines go on with demand during peak seasons.

Frozen and ready meals

Prepared frozen foods and ready-to-eat meals are also heavily benefiting from pre-made packaging machines in this modern age. The frozen entrees or vegetables are packed in specially designed pre-made bags that stand up to low temperatures even microwave heating. These bags mainly have thick laminates or retort materials (PET/ foil/ nylon layers) that do not become flaky in the freezer.

Packing machines for these products are made with strong frames and conveyors to support high weight. Often they include features like vacuum or modified atmosphere (MAP) filling to remove air and prevent freezer burn.

Frozen food or ready meal packing machines work like:  a horizontal or vertical bagger automatically fills frozen meal pouches and then seals them with heat securely.  As frozen foods are fragile, they need gentle feeding. So use chain bucket systems because they move products smoothly. Then sealed bags move on to quick freeze tunnels. Also these machines make portioning simpler: one machine can be programmed to fill single serve or family size meals as needed.

The main benefits of these machines for manufacturers are automation, speed, low cost, quality and reliability: pouch machines speed up the packaging process of heavy and bulky frozen items plus make sure seals are airtight. If we compare it to boxing or hand sealing, these machines require less labor and allow high throughput. Also, they improve food safety by using a vacuum/gas flush station that removes air and cuts out manual contact during sealing.

Staple foods, Powdered foods

We can find staple foods like rice, grains, flour and sugar packaged in larger pouches or bags in markets.

Pre-made bag packing machines can handle such powders and granules using different fillers. For example: rice or cereal grains filled with a volumetric or multihead weigher while flours and spices use auger fillers for precise weight. The bags for staple foods are usually made of strong materials like woven polypropylene or multilayer laminates (PET/ PE or kraft paper with PE lining). These are perfect to handle heavy weight.

A common issue with powder packaging is dust. This dust sticks to the bag opening, which not only causes leaks but also affects the sealing machine. You can fix this by adding a small vacuum system that removes excessive dust before sealing.

These packing machines can fill 1 kg, 5 kg or larger bags automatically. Most Importantly, these packaging protect against moisture, pests, contamination or tearing plus extends shelf life by controlling oxygen levels. Pre-made bags for grains mostly have strong seals or zipper closures for consumer’s convenience.

For manufacturers, using pre-made bag packing machines for staples means consistent bag filling, contamination or mixing-free and accurate weight packing plus less spillage. Also, automated capping (folding over top) and sealing restricts insect entry.

Spices and seasonings

Spices, herbs and powdered seasonings are classic applications for pre-made bag machines. These products need almost no oxygen exposure to stay dry and potent.

Packing machines for spices commonly use auger screw fillers or vibratory feeders to portion spices into bags accurately. Then after filling, these machines seal the pouch airtight mostly on multilayer film with a strong moisture barrier. Because spices are hygroscopic, an excellent barrier layer keeps them dry and locks in aromas.

Note that packing machines for spices mostly run slower per bag than for snacks because every jar sized bag must be precisely weighed.

For manufacturers, the benefit is clean product, uniform portioning, consistency and speed. Plus, products having rich flavor and improved shelf life. In fact, they give a product to customers full of freshness, flavour and free from dust and cross-contamination.

Fresh produce and dried fruits

The dried fruits are packed in special bags for longer shelf life and crispness. This is often done by pre-made bag packing machines. For dried fruits (raisins, apricots etc), transparent or foil-laminated stand-up bags are common, for sealing in flavor and preventing moisture gain. Packing machines accurately weight or cup-fill the fruit then tightly seal the bag to keep it chewy and fresh.

To pack fresh produce (salads, sliced fruits or vegetables), specialized bags with modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) are used. These bags may have tiny micro-perforations or are flushed with gas to control oxygen flow for slow ripening. But all fruits and vegetables are not packed by pre-made bag machines. Sometimes, pillow packing machines or special fruit packaging machines are used instead. These machines greatly handle the delicate nature of fresh produce and increase shelf life and preserve freshness.

Note: Some vegetables can tangle around the screw feeder, so this machine is not recommended for them.

The producers’ benefit is twofold: bags minimize handling (each portion is bagged and sealed automatically) and they preserve product’s freshness and quality. Some producers pack them in bright printed pre-made bags to give them a professional look.

Thus, groceries get a product with longer shelf life and consumers get convenience (e.g. grab-and-go salad bags), all by using pre-made pouch packaging machines.

Common bag types and materials used

Food grade pre-made bags come in many styles. Common bag types include pillow bags (simple 3 or 4-side sealed flat bags), stand-up pouches (with a bottom gusset that lets the bag stand upright), zipper pouches (with a pre-built zipper closure, reusable bags), spout pouches (with a pre-fitted pour nozzle or cap), and hang-hole bags (with a punched hole for peg display).

Manufacturers can also use flat-bottom or block-bottom bags for heavy products like rice.

Note: Premade bag packing machines can handle zipper and non-zipper bags, pillow or gusseted bags and various stand-up pouches (SUP, SURP, DOY).

The materials for these bags are multilayer laminates. Basic structures combine an inner sealant layer (polyethylene, PE) with outer layers that provide strength and barrier. For example: polyethylene is widely used as a heat-sealable layer to lock in freshness.

The food pouch has polyester (PET) or polypropylene (BOPP or OPP) outer layers that give mechanical strength and printability. To block moisture, oxygen and light, many pouches include an aluminum foil or EVOH barrier layer. Also, nylon (polyamide) may be added for puncture resistance. Some pouches even use paper or compostable PLA films for an eco-friendly look.

Thus a food bag might be made of an OPP/PE/metalized PET laminate whereas a premium spice pouch may use PET /foil /PE as an extra barrier. The combination of these layers is always chosen according to the product’s needs. In all cases, these flexible food pouches use significantly less material than rigid containers. That not only saves cost and weight plus provides excellent protection.

Machine selection criteria

When choosing a pre-made bag packing machine for a food product, several technical factors must be considered:

1. Filling systems

The choice of filler depends on the product form. Solid products (nuts or chips) normally require multihead weighers or volumetric cup dispensers for high speed filling. Moreover, powders (spices, flour) use auger or screw fillers to fill precise volumes without clumping. Also, liquids and pastes (oils, sauces) use piston pumps or diaphragm fillers.

Many modern machines are modular: one machine can switch from a weigher to an auger to a liquid pump with minimal changeover time. This flexibility allows manufacturers to run a range of products on the same line.

2. Sealing methods

The adoption of the sealing method directly depends on the bag’s material. The commonly used method is heat-sealed. Pre-made pouch machines simply use heat sealing jaws to seal the bag film. “Impulse heat sealers” are common for plastics.

Also, some high end lines use the ultrasonic sealing method. In this they use vibrations to join films without excessive heat. If the bag has a foil layer then the machine may use induction sealing (electromagnetic heating) on the bag’s opening.

You have to decide what method is right for your bag sealing. Whatever sealing method you choose, the seal must stay continuous and leak-free.

3. Bag feed and handling

Feeding bags reliably is the main key to uptime. Pre-made bags are loaded into a magazine or hopper commonly in stacks. The machine’s feed mechanism picks one bag at a time from this magazine. Suction cups or mechanical arms grab the bag and place it onto the bag holder. Next, the system opens the bag mouth with air jets or mechanical grippers and presents it for filling. Sensors verify the pouch is properly opened; if a bag fails to open, the machine rejects it.

After the opening, the filling system fills the product into the bag. The machine may include a bag shaker or leveler to settle the product. The final step is: an infeed or outfeed conveyor moves the filled pouch toward the sealing station. This coordinated bag handling makes sure continuous operation without jams.

Always select the bag feeding system according to the product, bag specifications, production rate, budget and level of automation you want.

4. Speed and indexing

The required production rate determines the machine’s design. Slower machines might run intermittently (indexing motion): fill one bag then move the next.  High speed machines mostly use rotary indexers or even continuous motion systems.

At these speeds, precise servo control and timing are very important. Continuous motion models can run even faster for stable products like snacks while intermittent machines may be suitable for delicate products.

SO, in any case, the machine’s index system must sync the bag feed, filling and sealing so that each pouch is filled without slowing the line. Manufacturers must compare required throughput (bags per minute) to the machine’s rated speed at the time of selection.

5. Food safety and hygiene support

Hygiene is a top priority in food packaging. Pre-made pouch machines are mostly made up of food-grade materials and meet sanitary standards. All product-contact parts are basically stainless steel (commonly SS304 or SS316) that resists corrosion and cleans easily.

The machines must have to comply with GMP/HACCP guidelines: they have rounded corners, sealed electronics and high-IP ratings so they can be washed down or cleaned in place.

For machine selection, you should focus on hygienic design features (stainless construction, easy access surfaces) plus automation (no-touch filling and sealing) are the important things to consider for machine selection. As food safety is the number priority on pouch packaging lines. After all, food safety is the number one goal of pre-made bag packing machines.

6. Shelf life improvement

Pre-made bag packing machines drastically improve food’s shelf life. A tight seal can double or triple shelf life compared to open bag storage.

The layered film and secured seal keep oxygen, pests, heat and moisture out to preserve freshness. For oxygen-sensitive foods, machines mostly fill bags with nitrogen gas before sealing.

Over time, products in MAP (modified atmosphere) pouches lose far less weight and spoil more slowly than in regular packaging.

All these factors together mean that packed foods stay at their peak quality much longer. Plus, foods remain tasty and safe throughout transport and storage.

Conclusion

Pre-made bag packaging machines are now indispensable for the food industry. They are globally used to pack snacks, bakery goods, candies, frozen meals, staples and more.By selecting the right machine (in terms of filling style, sealing method, speed and bag handling), food companies can efficiently package a wide variety of foods. The net benefit is very clear: pre-made bag packing machines empower safer, faster packaging lines and deliver fresh and better protected food products to market.
